I am not sold on the idea that higher resolutions are necessarily going to be the way of the future for consumers. So there is many ways of utilizing the new technology beyond pure entertainment and as you said, 4K and even 8k are not fads. So for him 4K makes a huge difference from lower resolutions. My stepfather had a stroke many years ago and have suffered from locked in syndrome since then, he communicates with a laser that reads his eye movements and we have discovered that he can communicate faster and more precise if the resolution of the screen is better. So for me the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is like night and day, 1080p and 4K is still a big difference but not as noticeable as the transition from DVD to Blu-ray was. I am 35 and my eyes may not work very well without glasses but with glasses they work perfectly. Of course if ones physical limits makes it impossible to notice a difference, than I understand why one may not be excited at all about these technological advances. As far as it goes, I do not think 4k or the other advances in technology are fads, but until technology furnishes my aging eyes and hearing with better advances then I can wait until I need a new tv or console before buying them. It is the same for going with a 4k tv over my 1080p, if a person cannot tell the difference then there is no need to change. With my eyes I cannot discern any difference so it really is wasted to buy the more expensive blu ray movies. ​I use the dvd or blu ray whichever is cheaper at the time.
